The North and South Poles were conquered with the help of sled dogs. Till the 1960s the dogs had been the only means of transportation between the settlements on Svalbard.
During this tour, you will live with us and we will share our lifestyle and knowledge of how to work and live with the sled dogs. You will dive into the whole process from the very beginning: participating in the daily care of the doggies, getting to know about specifics of the breeding and dogs' psychology, adjusting the sled, and going out with the tours.
At least two nights during the tour, you will spend in the total wilderness and will learn how we use our dogs as polar bear protection during the overnights.
In addition to that, we will show you how simple and minimalistic our way of life is, which is a big part of our eco-philosophy. The cabin you will also spend overnights in is rustic but very cozy with only handy things to use and more importantly to reuse. Heated with wood burning and electricity. There is all kitchen stuff (including small frige and stove) to make some simple meals.
There is no running water, so we do not have a shower or any washing facilities, water will be provided in containers for cooking and washing face/hands. For shower you can book sauna in the city or visit Svalbardhallen (gum or swimming pool).
On our overnight trip out in the wilderness, we will use a tent or insulated igloo. Depending on weather conditions and time of year. Meals on day-trips are included in the tour.
In the summer we are not only surrounded by our dogs, but also by the beautiful tundra landscape, mountain reefs, reindeer, birds, and flowers. From May to August we are surrounded by a colony of over 600 nesting eider ducks.
You will also have enough time to explore Longyearbyen and its surroundings. We are only 1.5 km from the city center, so it is easy to get there on foot or by bike.
The tour is one of the unique ones that are available all year round after which you will have an absolute understanding that nevertheless you are a local or a temporary visitor, it is important to remember that we are all guests in Svalbard and need to respect every bit of this place.

Practical info
The tour includes:• Pick-up transport from/to place of accommodation in Longyearbyen
• Overnights in a cabin, tents or igloo
• Sleeping bag
• Food on day-trips
• Dog sledding trips, hiking or snowshoe trips
• Equipment: a winter overall, shoes, a hat and gloves, a headlamp if needed
• Souvenir T-shirt- In addition:• In winter the tour program includes dog sledding trips and tours by snowshoes
• In summer there are dog sledding on wheels and hiking tours
• Minimum age: 18 y.o. - Cancellation policy:
- If cancelled 22 days or more prior to departure 100 % refund
- If cancelled 22-7 days prior to departure 50 % refund
- Cancellation less than 7 days prior to departure is a "no show" and does not qualify for any refund. You may apply to your insurance company for a refund if you provide a medical certificate.
- If Svalbard Villmarkssenter decides to cancel a trip due to weather conditions or any other reasons, you will receive a full refund!
